BEHIND THE BLOSSOMS

The story behind Frangipani Flower and the new Blossoms collection, with Jo Malone London’s Head of Global Product Development, Céline Roux, and master perfumer Marie Salamagne.

What was the inspiration for Frangipani Flower?
Céline: The first memory I have of frangipani is from a trip to Bali many years ago. I wasn’t even working in fragrance at that point, so it was more about the look of the flower than the scent. It’s very different to other blossoms – with a pinwheel of beautiful white petals and a bright yellow centre, you can spot it from miles away. Then while working in perfumery and travelling to Asia a lot, I came across it many times. Frangipani flowers are so iconic and symbolic there – you’ll find them blooming everywhere from Dubai to Taiwan, planted near ornate temples or worn by Hindu women in their hair. I’ve been taken with frangipani ever since.

Tell us more about the scent of the frangipani flower…
Céline: The Hair Mist is a totally different formula that we created especially for Star Magnolia when it launched in 2017. The mist is very respectful to the hair – it’s filled with nourishing and softening ingredients yet is very lightweight, leaving your hair with a slight sheen and a delicate scent. We thought Orange Blossom and Star Magnolia would both work well as a Hair Mist as they are very sparkling, shimmering scents. You can wear the Hair Mist on its own, combined with any of the Colognes in the Blossom Daze collection or with your signature scent – anything goes!

Marie: I used to think that frangipani was much heavier than it is in reality, but re-smelling the flowers with Céline totally changed my mind.

What are your favourite Fragrance Combining pairings for Frangipani Flower?
Céline: For an intense floral combination I would say Honeysuckle & Davana – for something a little lighter, the scent works beautifully with Wild Bluebell.

Marie: I love it with Red Roses, which really emphasises the dewy notes in Frangipani Flower. I would also pair it with Orange Blossom Hair Mist. I love spraying my hair as it makes scent last much longer – so even when you move your hair dancing that night, you can still smell it!

The new collection celebrates some of our past blossom scents, how were these chosen?
Céline: Our blossom scents are always very popular, so we get a lot of requests to bring them back. We choose different ones to return each year – this time, we wanted to play with our previous limited editions while also celebrating one of the blossoms in our regular line-up. So, there’s Silk Blossom, Star Magnolia and Orange Blossom – they all work really well together as a blossom family.

Why did you decide to bring back some of the blossoms as Candles and Diffusers?
Céline: As a lifestyle brand, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to not only talk about Colognes but give you the chance to bring blossoms into your home and incorporate them into your beauty routine. The Silk Blossom Candle and Orange Blossom Diffuser will fill your home with fresh floral scents – ideal for the first bloom of spring.
