It is perhaps in our most relaxed moments that the best ideas come to us, as master perfumer Anne Flipo discovered during balmy evenings in her garden with the sweet, heady scent of honeysuckle in the air. ‘It produces such a complex, rich fragrance that I knew at some point I’d use it in a major launch for a major brand,’ she says. This was the beginning of the journey for Jo Malone London’s latest cologne, Honeysuckle & Davana.
Davana adds a lot of sensuality and gives
honeysuckle a modern, sophisticated edge
‘At Jo Malone London, it’s a unique and creative approach. We play a lot,’ Anne explains. ‘We start with a strong moment – like being in my garden at night – and build the story from there.’
With this seed of an idea, Anne and Céline Roux, Jo Malone London’s Head of Global Fragrance, travelled to an arboretum in the Cotswolds, where they found wild honeysuckle entwining itself around trees. As the day progressed, they noticed how its fragrance began to change, little by little, and decided to return at midnight. It was that fragrant moment in the honeysuckle’s nocturnal transition they knew they wanted to evoke. ‘At night, the scent is more interesting, more sensual,’ Anne says. ‘With a flower like the rose, you need to go up close to smell it. But what makes honeysuckle so special is that it fills the air.’
‘After capturing the fresh aspect of honeysuckle, we played with davana, which balances very well with honeysuckle’s floral notes, adding something fruity and deep. Davana opens honeysuckle up to create a woody, citrusy effect, adding a lot of sensuality and a modern, sophisticated edge.’
Like all Jo Malone London fragrances, Honeysuckle & Davana evolves and adapts wonderfully when it’s combined. ‘I love it with Oud & Bergamot Cologne because it enhances the freshness of the honeysuckle and makes it more concentrated,’ Anne adds. ‘Grapefruit Cologne adds a citrus sparkle and a bitterness that energises it.
